Scratch I Programming: Introductory Program
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art, and to share your creations on the web. As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
Students ease into object-oriented programming concepts with Scratch, creating stories and interactive adventures with stackable code blocks! Students master the intuitive user interface of Scratch and learn the functions of the most important blocks, which beneath their friendly appearance represent important computer programming functions.
Scratch II Programming: Intermediate
This class builds on Scratch programing basics. Students continue to explore, learn, and experiment with Scratch’s more advanced features and dive into the world of game design. We will also be investigating the extensive online resources for continued learning.
Smartphone App Development (Grades 4-5)
Your child will program a fully functional smartphone app. This program uses color-coded blocks that snap together, avoiding confusing computer syntax. The course will emphasize logical thinking, knowledge of tools, self-expression, presentation skills, and collaboration with peers. No smartphone is necessary, but each student should bring a laptop computer to class. This course is a logical extension of Scratch.
The goal of this class is to help every child develop a love of writing. We will practice creative journaling, free writing, and creative writing in a safe environment where confidence can bloom for each child. Our mission is to nourish the appetites of gifted and talented (G&T) students by providing them with appropriate challenges, and effectively preparing them for G&T tests. Our instructors take extra care to foster a level of comfort and understanding during the classes. From the wide set of standardized tests that are given, the G&T tests are perhaps the trickier of the bunch. In addition to developing the problem-solving techniques that are the crux of our test-prep tutoring, our instructors also take care to emphasize the specific knowledge, concepts, strategies and skill sets required for success on these tests. We emphasize the kinds of problem-solving skills that will enable your student to effectively wrestle with unusual and/or unfamiliar questions.
Math and Logic Grades K-3
Our math program for early elementary school children (K-3) utilizes a variety of activities that create a foundation for mathematical understanding, problem solving, and developing logical thinking. Fun is critical to learning at this age. Our students will be entertained by creative intellectual games that develop their imagination and intellectual abilities. Our classes promote healthy challenge, the kind that allows a child’s cognitive abilities to reach their full potential.
Our instructors implement the learning plan and work with each student to ensure they master the material. They foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn!
The results are transformative—families will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.
Mathematics Grades 4-5 (Singapore Math System)
Our math program includes sections designed to help students prepare for the fast-paced, multiple-choice problem solving they will need to excel on standardized tests, as well as a non-routine approach and creative thinking that is required to solve challenging word problems commonly found on tests such as ISEE and in the Math Olympiads. By strengthening their grasp of Arithmetic and learning the interconnectedness of fundamental math concepts, students will gain the tools to improve their grades and test scores in the classroom.
Science: Engineering is Elementary
Exploring topics such as Astronomy, Air and Weather, Energy, Organisms, Solids and Liqiuds, Light and Sound, to name a few, will not only support students when it comes time to learn physics, chemistry and biology, but it will also spark their lifelong exploration of science, technology, engineering and math.
STEM subjects are relevant to their lives, the lives of others and to our society as a whole. Each lesson consists of research-based, teacher-tested activities that develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Our hands-on, cooperative, project-based engineering activities that integrate with science instruction not only engage children and teach them how to investigate the way scientists work, but also aligns with the National Science Education Standards. Each lesson teaches children how to think and behave like scientists. Children learn how to form hypotheses, test their ideas, document their experiments, observe the results and make conclusions.
