Arts and Crafts

Discovering Art

(Grade 6)
Students are introduced to a variety of different media and techniques. We explore the invention of culture and how the original arts reflected human intelligence and civilization. We will learn about art and artists from many cultures from prehistory up to the early Middle Ages in Europe. Hands-on experiences in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture will encourage self-expression and develop creative problem-solving skills.

Beginning Sewing

 Learn how to thread a needle, do basic hand and embroidery stitches, make a simple pattern, and pin and cut fabric. Use a sewing machine to practice your new knowledge, and take home your many new creations.

Comic Book Design

Our artists will explore drawing techniques in all different mediums and styles in a fun and creative environment. The workshops will provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the comic book industry, animation fundamentals, and the art world as a whole. Our instructors demonstrate and teach students various techniques including proportion, perspective, composition, 3D drawing, and the principles of character design.

Fashion Design

If you have a passion for fashion and want to learn how to design and draw beautiful fashion images – this is the class for you! In our class students begin by learning the basics of fashion rendering and illustration, as well as learning fun facts about famous fashion designers and fashion history.

Once students are comfortable with fashion illustration, they design and illustrate their very own fashion lines. Students create original croquis and are guided through a series of design inspirations.

Enrollment runs month to month, encouraging students to progress according to their own unique abilities – students may join at any time. Each student works on their own individual project and can come to different class times throughout the month.

Jewelry Making

Our team of highly trained, experienced, enthusiastic staff love teaching the art of jewelry making to children in a fun, engaging and age appropriate way. We offer Jewelry Making, Art & Immersion classes for children – learn a new skill & increase your creativity!

Our classes focus on teaching children real jewelry making techniques such as beading, wire work, copper etching, enameling, resin, waxed Irish linen, stamping & dapping, bead stringing, crimping, wool felting and much more in a fun way!

Knitting and Felting

Beginning and intermediate knitters, come and learn to finger knit and needle knit to make scarves, coin purses, or more advanced projects. We will also dye yarn and make pom-pom wreaths and our own French knitters. Campers will also learn a basic crochet along with wet felting balls, leaves, and angels.  No experience required.

Manga (Japanese Comics)

This is your chance to learn not only how to draw Manga characters but to develop and write manga. Learn how to make panels, incorporate text, design your page, create fantastic creatures, and more! Manga is an incredible way for kids who love to draw to find their own path and be cool at the same time. Highly stylized and easy to learn, kids master proportions, line weight, how to use a nib and a brush, and much more, all while using their brains and imagination to create their own fantastic characters and stories.

Theater

Our mission is to provide the highest caliber of performing arts education to students of all ages and abilities, and to foster individual growth in a caring, supportive artistic community. We create a positive, fun environment where friendships and love for the arts grow and flourish.  Our classes build each student’s self-confidence on and off stage, and provide a variety of opportunities for students to demonstrate the new skills they have mastered.

Business Entrepreneur Camp

Learn the necessary elements of starting and operating a business! Learn to analyze a business opportunity, determine the feasibility of an idea through research, develop and fine-tune a unique product or service, identify the competition, develop a marketing plan to promote the business, unveil the principles of branding, and finally, understand the capital required for a start-up. In addition, various field trips and guest speakers will give you an opportunity to explore and identify the nature of entrepreneurship.

Chess

Have fun learning the basic principles, tactics, and opening themes of this great game. We provide high quality instruction and professionally run competitions for chess players of all skill levels. The comprehensive course gives each student the precise material they need at every stage of their development.  We offer a wide range of activities for students who wish to learn and have fun.

Using a proven curriculum designed to make chess fun and exciting, our Certified Instructors can help your child to develop the skills that will help him or her excel in the future.

College Essay

Increase your writing power! Learn and practice techniques for more successful nonfiction pieces and stronger college essays. Build the skills you need for vivid, effective personal writing. Work on all levels: sentences, paragraphs, and the big picture. Study selections from great nonfiction writers and literary journalists. Leave class with a college essay draft that you can use in the application process. The overall curriculum prepares students for the ISEE high school entrance exam.

Hybrid Creative Writing

In this class we’ll read work from writers that surpass the need for genre specification. We’ll take a look at works in translation, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, poetry– we’ll look at what makes the work startling.  Better yet, we’ll learn to craft our own. This class is equal parts reading, writing, workshop and discussion. It’s no fun reading something without trying your hand at it. We’ll be trying lots of hands.

Computers

Minecraft Java Mods

Programming doesn’t have to be boring! Write your own Minecraft plugins and watch your code come to life with flaming cows, flying creepers, teleportation, and interactivity. Follow along with examples and add your own features to the Minecraft game by developing Java code that “plugs into: the server. You’ll manipulate and control elements in the 3D graphical game environment without having to write tons of code or learn huge frameworks. You don’t need programming experience to get started, we will teach you everything you need to know.

Introduction to Programming with Python

A first course in computer programming using the Python programming language.

Mathematics

Our experienced instructors work with middle school kids to help them forge ahead in math classes. Students are given a “preview” of math concepts and lessons that they will encounter in future classes to help prepare them for high school, college, and beyond. We also help students understand their homework as part of each session and prepare them for school tests, as well as standardized tests such as high school entrance exams. Skills covered in Algebra course include: graphing and solving linear equations and inequalities, properties of exponents and radicals, work with quadratic functions.

During the geometry course students will study coordinate geometry, angles, geometry of measure, and much more. The course also includes sections on trigonometry, logic, and the theory of proof.

Science (S.T.E.M.)

Middle school students will learn how engineers help society, and they experience engineering themselves through hands-on, creative investigations and design activities.  Activities include designing earthquake-proof bridges, solar-powered boats, Scratch programming, nitrogen ice cream and many more!

The Sixth Grade science program revolves around the theme “Energy and Life.” We  focus on the physical sciences, exploring various forms of energy such as solar, heat, electrical, and chemical energy, cells, cardiovascular system, ecology, as well as time spent designing and implementing student-led research projects.

The seventh grade science is the study of the Earth as a system of interacting spheres. We focus on one of Earth’s spheres: the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, or biosphere. Each unit’s concepts are developed through a system analysis of an event’s effect on each of the other spheres and the earth as a whole

The Eighth Grade science curriculum is a combination of physical science and life science. We focus on the astronomy course and Darwin’s theory of evolution.
